In class today we discussed the roles in a family and which gender fulfills those roles in our individual families. It turned out that for most jobs in was pretty split. Some men like to cook, or clean, so roles that may be thought of as the 'woman's job' may also be done by males. This goes along with roles that may be less tangible such as a peacemaker, protector, planner, helper, provider and many others. Who fulfills those roles in your own family??
The first presidency of the Church came out with a document some time ago that addresses this exact topic. Its called The Family: A Proclamation to the World, here is one section of it:
Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.
As I was reading this statement over again I realized how important this document is in today's society! Satan would give anything to attack this small unit and pull apart one eternal or happy family at a time. It is so important to look to our leaders and realize what kinds of roles we need to play and what is expected from a family that can be together forever. That is the end result we're going for here. We need to learn to work together, no matter what part we play in a family, we need to give it our all.
